We're starting the week hot. Coming up today, death over enchiladas. Speaking of hot. Also, are we going to get days of woke thunder? But first up, we are starting inside the treehouse today with fanning the flames of the nerd slash gaming community. I had no idea the hornet's nest that I had stirred up last week when I said that Mortal Kombat 2 was worse than it looked. Our comment section on social media was on fire with pissed off gaming movie nerd fans saying it wasn't that bad, to which I say, if your defense of the film is it wasn't that bad, That's not a good starting point, but it was really interesting to see how many people got pissed off by me simply saying Mortal Kombat 2 was not good. And Trey, did you take it upon yourself to watch it?

2:14 I did. What did you think? I liked it. Okay. I don't believe you. Now I think you're just pandering to the comments section. So now this pains me to say Carl Urban sucked in it. Yes. But now my, my threshold for quality in a mortal combat movie is fairly low, but if you take Carl, like, first of all, It should be illegal to have any movie where Carl Urban does not say, okay, he is the Shakespeare of.

3:02 You know what? You're right. After his turn as Billy Butcher in the boys, seeing Carl Urban and not hearing him drop the C bomb feels like a missed opportunity. It is, especially in a movie that's already got a hard R there's F bombs everywhere. one good C-bomb would have gone a long way in that movie. It would have. I thought he was a poor, just poor casting, really. And maybe he's just aged. They needed him. To me, Johnny Cage probably needed to be a little bit younger. And it was just, he was a little too gimmicky with him. But all in all, like I said, I'm not expecting... high-quality dialogue or anything in a Mortal Kombat movie. I thought the action was good. They killed off people I wasn't expecting them to kill off. So yeah, I liked it for what it was.

Maybe that was my problem going into it, is because of how much I enjoyed the previous Mortal Kombat movie, that one raised my expectations a little bit, and Mortal Kombat 2 fell short of them. I'm with you. I love Carl Urban. I think he's a fantastic actor in this role. It just didn't work. I don't know if it was necessarily his fault or if that's the fault of the director, whoever that was. But I even told one of our very good listeners, Jason, who had asked me and sent me a direct message. He was asking what about it really just seemed to bother me about the movie. And I was like, one of the things I took an issue with was.

4:40 How. how unconvincing Carl Urban was as Johnny Cage. Like there were parts of the, you know, the fight sequences where it's clearly Carl Urban because it doesn't look convincing doing it. Like it looks like it's the first time he's ever blocked a punch, which I know is not necessarily his fault because he's been plenty convincing in other roles. So I don't know why this one would be any different. So that to me is a product when I'm watching and I'm thinking like, That's not even very convincing that he's able to block a punch. That's a problem. So he's fine in the boys where he's fighting more of just brawling, punching. But as far as martial arts go, he wasn't convincing. Yeah, you could see times where it was him and his movement is like a guy in his 50s.

5:35 Yeah, it's hard to move like that. Guess what? It's hard to get out of bed, let alone doing a standing front flip. So that was probably the one part I found somewhat disappointing. The rest of it, like I said, I thought it was pretty solid. Again, for a Mortal Kombat movie. And keeping in mind, yeah, I'm not expecting Shakespeare out of this film. I just had higher expectations, and I thought some of the writing... some of the writing had some good self-aware moments, but the movie didn't feel completely self-aware as it should have been. There were times where it felt stuck in between trying to be, you know, like this Mortal Kombat movie versus a self-aware tongue in cheek aspect of a, you know, of an adaptation of a video game. Um, well, some of the acting I thought was just so bad. Even I couldn't get past.

6:33 I was like, Jesus, this person's talking. I, To me, all the bad parts really centered around Carl Urban and Johnny Cage. Everything else I thought was... Yeah, there was some stiff acting. The stiffest acting, unironically, was the guy with the robot arms. But I. So that character to me has always been... stiff i mean the military guy that didn't bother me um i just. Thought it was fascinating how you know you said that you thought it looked really really awful and i said that it looks work that it was worse than it looked and that got the comment section all fired up um.

7:23 Oh yeah they they no one was happy with you really you had you had a one or two people that that agreed with you other than that it was a pretty sound uh. I took a shellacking in the comments section. I just needed someone else to come up and finish me. But see, now a lot of those people don't know how big of a deal, because those are just online people, right? Not all of them are listeners. So those people that are our listeners know that for me to say a movie was genuinely bad, it takes a lot, right? Like I can call a movie bad and say it's bad, but I can still say I liked it and here are the reasons why. This one was just, to me, it was just, it was so bad that it wasn't redeemable enough.

8:12 It just goes to show you how bad your taste in movies is. I disagree. Now, like Jason had mentioned, Jason, he and I exchanged a couple of messages on Instagram, and he asked me, he was like, what part of the movie, you know, turned you off personally? And I told him, I was like, the fight stuff with Carl Urban was silly looking. Some of the writing stuff, I told you kind of already. Um, and he actually brought up a good point. Uh, Jason said, I wasn't too keen on him. Carl urban being Johnny cage. I personally thought the Ms would be a good fit for the role. I agree. I think that would have been a more interesting casting choice, uh, for Johnny cage in this movie. Definitely would have been a lot more convincing with the fighting.

8:59 I just am not that familiar with the Ms. I know he's a wrestler. Um, I think there definitely could have, there, there were better choices. Um, and it started to me, but the casting of Carl Urban got you and me more interested in the movie than I think I would have been otherwise. I still would have seen it, but I had a heightened interest because it was, uh, Carl Urban. Yeah. And Carl Urban 10 years ago, probably it's a better, it's a different choice. Um, but yeah, I, he was by far and away the worst part of the movie and it, and it kills me to say that, but, uh, it was, I understand where he was kind of over the top with the role. Yeah. But it was to me that the Johnny Cage character, yeah, it has to be over the top, but also needs to actually fight.

9:58 I mean, I go back 25, 30 years ago, that is a Jean-Claude Van Damme role to a T. Especially with the splits. I mean, I'm pretty sure that that's where they got Johnny Cage's move was from Bloodsport. Same way that they think that Raiden's character from Mortal Kombat was directly lifted from Bloodsport. Big Trouble in Little China, which we all think there's no question in that. So now we go from Mortal Kombat 2 news into other sequel news that popped over the weekend. And that was the announcement on social media from Tom Cruise and Anne Hathaway about Days of Thunder 2.

It is just in that Tom Cruise wheelhouse of late 80s fantastic movies for me. The original came out 1990. Okay. But yeah. And after what he did with Maverick, Top Gun Maverick, I'm all for it. Now, I have seen things about their calling it like, Days of Woke Thunder or something like that, which I don't know. I didn't read anything about it, so I'm at a loss for it.

He says the selection of Anne Hathaway in the sequel to Days of Thunder is a huge mistake. It's because she's a leftist woke person and that what they should have done was had Nicole Kidman back in the film opposite Tom Cruise. So one of his posts on. Randy Quaid is still alive.

Anne isn't sexy. because, and if you haven't noticed, she's pregnant. He doubled down on that by saying, Anne Hathaway is a leftist, woke, horrible choice for Days of Thunder, NASCAR audience who are MAGA.

13:58 The sexy older chick for Tom in this film needs to be Nicole. That's the casting that would sell the idea. It's interesting because when we made the first one, there was also a rush to get it out. Editors slept in the cutting room on shifts. This is a weird thing, like they want it to come out and tank. So Randy Quaid has, has made the days of thunder to announcement into a political firestorm. So we're not, I don't know necessarily a firestorm, but in his mind, it's a firestorm. He basically just says, you know, you've got Anne Hathaway who is a super liberal and it seems silly to cast a super liberal liberal in a film that is going to be cared about mostly by conservatives who love NASCAR.

14:43 Oh, I think that's, I mean, first of all, Randy Quaid lost his mind. How long ago? 15 years, probably. I mean, I know we were on the radio at the time. I don't remember. He was releasing videos of him screwing his wife, wearing like horse masks and stuff. I mean, it was just, it was a really weird stuff. Well, then he, I mean, he went on some rants on, and then he like escaped to Canada or I don't remember. It was, but he was just bizarre. Going through some of his recent posts, he's now very anti-Canada. Anne Hathaway's on a roll right now, so I totally understand why they cast her.

Obviously, he doesn't care what he says and whether or not he offends somebody, but it's like, first of all, Anne Hathaway versus Nicole Kidman, any day of the week, it's Anne Hathaway. I don't care what time frame, what era, I will die on the Anne Hathaway hill. I would take Nicole Kidman back then, but number one, huh?

It's like, well, that's a very personal thing that you're saying. It's a personal opinion and it's a personal thing against her. And it ultimately doesn't matter because in filmmaking, you do have to have a good working relationship with someone. And some people may not work good with their ex-wives. Yeah. Especially when you haven't spoken in over 20 years.

16:49 And I don't think Anne Hathaway is sexy per se. I think she's really, I think she's beautiful. But I have faith in Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise has got to know he's coming to the end of his run as an action star. So, This movie makes perfect sense to me. Everything he has done as of late has been gold, so I have no reason to think that they won't make this one great. I'm with you. Aside from... I'm sorry, go ahead. I don't think you need to be a NASCAR fan in order to want to see Days of Thunder 2. I wasn't a NASCAR fan when Days of Thunder came out, nor did it even make me a NASCAR fan at the time, but... So, yeah, I think that's also stupid.

One, because of Top Gun, I would get in that refrigerator box and pretend I was in an F-14 Tomcat. And then when Days of Thunder came out, I got to pretend I was cold trickle going around the track, going toe to toe with Rowdy. or uh the guy from the princess bride carrie elwes uh i loved days of thunder and like you trey it did not turn me into a nascar fan but i loved that movie so when i saw the announcement over the weekend i actually got chills i couldn't believe it was like i got chills for a nascar thing that i'm not even i don't watch races or anything but based on a movie i'm like god i can't wait for this fire up the.

18:32 As far as casting goes, they've got to have the good heel, you know, bad guy, which to me, there's one person they should cast. If they were going to try to do that kind of Carrie Elway's role, Glenn Powell. Yeah. I'm with you there. He would be more perfect casting choice. Yeah. Because he, because he was sort of that in top gun Maverick. Uh, so, uh, doing it again would certainly fit. Um, don't know what they're going to do story wise, but according to some early reports and Hathaway's character is going to be, I believe a team owner and engineer. Don't know if she's going to necessarily be a love interest or if she perhaps might be a competing team owner.

19:23 Maybe she's sort of the bad guy in the situation. We don't know, have no idea what the story, uh, holds. Um, But I do know, like you said, Trey, I'm with you. Like Tom Cruise is probably realizing he's at the end of some of his action days. So he's going back through his catalog thinking, OK, what can I remake? The way we did Top Gun and really deliver for fans of these films and Days of Thunder 2. 2 hell yes. Listen there have been people asking for a Days of Thunder sequel for just about as long as they were a Top Gun sequel yeah and now it'll be really curious because if Tom Cruise tries to be the driver of It's going to be a complete suspension of disbelief because NASCAR drivers, you just, you lose it at a certain point. I mean, especially past 50, it ain't happening.

20:21 And maybe that's going to be the point of the film is like people convincing him. It's like, dude, you got to give it up. No, no, I just need one more ride. And maybe that'll be the film and it'll be that thin. But because of the success of Top Gun Maverick, and even in addition to that, The success that he's had with the entire Mission Impossible series, when you go back and watch them, it's easy to point back if you've never seen them and point about how ridiculous this many sequels to a franchise there are. But when you actually watch them, they're really good. And part of the reason they're really good is because of Tom Cruise and also his producing and writing partner, Christopher McQuarrie. That dude, those two together do some really good work.

21:03 And so I'm fired up about Days of Thunder, too. And it also gets me thinking, OK, well, if Tom Cruise is going through his catalog thinking, OK, what can I start making sequels out of? What else would I like to see Tom Cruise revisit? Like, are we going to get, you know, Color of Money 2 or My Wife's Worst Nightmare Cocktail 2? Because as a bartender, when she was like 18, 17, 18 years old, it cocktail was required watching for her starting out in bars because they wanted her to do flair and she's like I don't do flair I make drinks so she hates that movie.

When I was like five years old, to me, it was on the same level as Ice Pirates, which is unfortunate for the Dune. But this current Denis Villeneuve Dune trilogy, it's really, really good. And it is stacked. On the cast. The first one was really, really good. The second one's good. And you know it has this whole arc where it goes where Paul Atreides ends up being the bad guy because he becomes what he's trying to fight against. The third one's going to be really good and interesting to see. I'm excited for it. It'll be a fun day at the movies, though, because they're going to have Dune 3 in one theater and Avengers Doomsday in the other.

It's very possible when it comes to the Doomsday casting, because There are so many rumors that are floating around on that. And you know what? I don't care. Oh, this storyline has been leaked. Here's what it is. I don't want to know. I want to go to the movie and enjoy it. I'd like a little bit of surprise. It's actually about the only thing in my life that I don't mind being surprised.

Going into that last break, we were talking about Florence Pugh in the new Spider-Man movie, also in Dune 3. She's going to have a huge end of the year being in Dune 3 and Avengers Doomsday.

38:32 And because social media shows you the stuff that you show any inkling of an interest in, I watched a couple of Florence Pugh videos because they were clips of her from the Spider-Man movie. And so now I'm seeing a bunch of Florence Pugh stuff. I don't know if you've seen I know you've seen the new Spider-Man movie where it's her in her office, the Russian bathhouse and Spider-Man is in there with the mask on. There's this one clip that keeps circulating that I watch every single time because it's hysterical. It was hysterical in the movie and it's hysterical on on social media. When someone points out Florence Pugh, something along the lines of. Florence Pugh is a legend for her reaction to Peter's feet in the bath. Because when his feet come up, she briefly pauses and does a double take and then goes back to what she was saying about potatoes and things.

It's such a detail thing but it's the mark of a phenomenal actor who can look at something and make something so small huge and it's hysterical that whole scene I love that movie I love that movie so hard. It really surprised me that that character they they has developed so well out of the Black Widow movie. A lot of people thought she was kind of over the top in it. I liked her in Black Widow. I thought she was great. I don't know what it is. I haven't dug in too much of it, but I guess some people didn't like Thunderbolts that much. I thought it was fantastic. I thought Thunderbolts was really, really good, which became New Avengers.

I think his wife had passed away and so he devoted his life to raising his kids. And yeah, it was a huge deal to get him out of retirement. So that wouldn't surprise me. Let's, let's, uh, before we get into death, you know, actually let's just start with death over enchiladas. I want to make sure we don't miss this story because it's absolutely terrible. An argument over green chili enchiladas escalated to a homicide investigation. Whoops. A disagreement over the heat of green chili enchiladas led to a fatal shooting Friday in northeast Albuquerque. A spokesman for Albuquerque police says 22-year-old Irvin Gutierrez got into a fight with a relative, Nathaniel Cavazos. Court records say the fight took place after Gutierrez claimed that the green chilies in his enchiladas were hotter than then the Green Chili's Cavazos made for himself and another person. According to records, Cavazos attempted to walk away from Gutierrez. Once the fight ended, Gutierrez pulled out a gun and shot Cavazos at least once after the two men began to argue. Cavazos died at the scene. Now Gutierrez is being held at Metropolitan Detention Center on a murder charge. He made his first court appearance on Saturday, and now his case moves to the 2nd District Court, where a detention hearing will be held next week. all because of the heat over some
